NAICS Code Revision

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) recently added a new NAICS code designated for farm supply retailers. NAICS code 444240 was created to be more descriptive for establishments engaged in retail farm supply. The previous code commonly used by ag retailers, 424910, is descriptive for farm supplies merchant wholesalers. The selection of the NAICS code should be based off the most accurate description/representation of the primary activity of your business. In other words, if the NAICS code currently listed for your establishment is 424910 and you are not engaged in merchant wholesale distribution and only engaged in retail farm supplies, the code should be changed to 444240 to reflect retail farm supply. 444240 Nursery, Garden Center, and Farm Supply Retailers

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in retailing nursery and garden products, such as trees, shrubs, plants, seeds, bulbs, and sod, that are predominantly grown elsewhere. These establishments may sell a limited amount of a product they grow themselves. Also included in this industry are establishments primarily engaged in retailing farm supplies, such as animal (except pet) feed, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pesticides.

424910 Farm Supplies Merchant Wholesalers

This industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in the merchant wholesale distribution of farm supplies, such as animal feeds, fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, pesticides, plant seeds, and plant bulbs.
