Grain Bin Safety

In partnership with the Safety and Technical Rescue Association (SATRA), the NW Ohio Grain Safety Training Center prepares first responders through hands-on training for emergency situations at commercial grain operations. When stored grain forms hard bridges, columns and other irregularities, those working to correct it find themselves at risk of becoming trapped inside bins, creating the need for local firefighters to respond. However, many first responders lack the training necessary to handle these type of situations.
The Northwest Ohio Grain Elevator Work and Rescue Training is a 4-day, 40-hour High Angle & Confined Space Work/Rescue Class annually. Conducted by SATRA and led by professional firefighters, participants learn about issues surrounding grain bins, OSHA standards, air monitoring and more. They also build practical skills, like rope and harness work, during the first two days to prepare them for more advanced scenarios in later sessions.
During days three and four, first responders learn rescue procedures using grain bins at the facility. Firefighters work in teams of eight to plan and lead rescues in the bins, with SATRA teachers on-site to monitor and check participants’ work. At the conclusion of the training, participants work through an entire rescue scenario, from the first call through the grain bin rescue.
At the completion of the 40-Hour High Angle & Confined Space Work/Rescue Class students will receive a certificate for the following standards.

Courses are OSHA and NFPA Compliant for both Industry and Emergency Response Services.
