Sustaining Sponsor Spotlight: Ohio Soybean Council
The Ohio AgriBusiness Association is pleased to feature our Sustaining Sponsors in the 2022 Spotlight Series. This week, the focus is on Platinum Sponsor: Ohio Soybean Council.
Location (Main Headquarters): Worthington, OH
Year started: 1991
Number of employees: 9
Number of facilities: 2
Type of services offered: Research, Marketing, Communication, Education to increase the value of soybeans and enhance Ohio soybean farmer profitability
Company history: OSC was established in 1991 after a national referendum of soybean farmers created the soybean checkoff. Our board is all soybean farmers from around Ohio who volunteer their time to help their fellow farmers.
How has your company changed over the years? Over the years our board has kept us consistently focused on work that they believe makes a difference for Ohio soybean farmers, but the work itself has changed significantly in the past 30 years.
How do you see your company growing in the future? Our purpose is to help farmers increase profitability so we are not focused on growing our organization except to the extent that our board sees opportunities for us to further our mission to serve farmers.
Interesting tidbits about your business: OSC’s sister organization is the Ohio Soybean Association, which advocates on behalf of Ohio soybean farmers for policies that reduce regulatory burdens on farmers. The two organizations have separate governance structures and separate boards, but share the services of the Ohio Soybean staff. We also are the only state soybean checkoff with our own lab for new uses research. Our board has always seen great value in investing checkoff dollars in research for new soy-based products so we established our own laboratory, Airable Research Lab, in 2019 in existing lab space on Ohio Wesleyan University’s campus.
How has OABA helped your business or the agribusiness industry? OABA is a valued partner in advocating for policies that improve business conditions for Ohio agriculture, in identifying priorities that Ohio agriculture needs to pursue to benefit farmers, and in developing the next generation of leaders in Ohio agribusiness.
