Director, Quality, Animal Food Safety and Education

The American Feed Industry Association is hiring a Director of Quality, Animal Food Safety and Education.

Position Summary:

Provide proactive industry representation and leadership on quality issues; AFIA certification programs; federal and state regulatory & legislative positions; technical leadership; leadership for assigned committees; and member support in the issue areas of animal food safety, quality, and education and training.

Position Responsibilities:

Certification Programs:

Lead the development and growth of AFIA certification programs (Safe Feed/Safe Food, Pet Food, International Safe Feed/Safe Food and the SQFI Alliance).
Monitor the industry with regard to other certification programs. Make necessary changes for AFIA’s certification programs to remain a leader in the industry and ensure the programs meet or exceed all government requirements.
Direct the marketing of AFIA certification programs to ensure their growth.
Monitor licensed certifying bodies, logo licensing and federal/state compliance by certified facilities, and update those programs as needed.

Regulatory and Legislative Representation (Animal Food Safety):

Participate with the Legislative and Regulatory Team and proactively lead the development of regulatory issues as they relate to animal food safety.
Participate in relevant international and national consensus standard development bodies.
Keep industry informed of developments, develop and disseminate compliance information and respond to member questions.
Regularly write articles for AFIA and industry publications.
Speak at various agribusiness association meetings, board meetings, etc.
Initiate coalitions to assist in consensus building or participate in relevant coalitions.

Education and Training Leadership (Educational Forums, Committees, Task Forces):

Direct the development, promotion and implementation of AFIA education forums that meet industry’s critical needs (feed, ingredient and pet food manufacturing, integrators, quality, purchasing, animal food safety, safety and health, environmental, etc.).
Develop and maintain alliances with appropriate industries, other associations and industry partners that enhance and contribute to the continuous upgrading of “state of the art” educational programs and offerings.
Provide staff leadership for assigned committees and task forces (Integrator and Laboratory MIGs and Quality and Animal Food Safety Committee) as they continuously provide a defined and recognizable member value.
Foster interaction of assigned member groups with other like groups.
Develop and conduct appropriate industry development and recognition programs.

Administrative:

Actively participate as member of the key management team for AFIA.
Work with meeting planners to successfully plan and carry out training/education events.
Contribute to the development of the annual budget, and take accountability for leading specific events and expense categories.
Participate in membership recruiting and retention.
Assist in meeting overall strategic objectives and annual goals.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in agribusiness, animal food manufacturing, animal science or related field or equivalent experience.
Five to seven or more years in animal food safety, quality, regulatory, feed plant and/or corporate management with demonstrated leadership experience.
Ability to investigate, analyze and comprehend regulations and policy procedures.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Sound writing and public speaking skills.
Proficient computer, software and internet knowledge and experience.
Ability to accomplish objectives with and through alliances and team leadership.
