California Voters Defeated Proposition 37

Proposition Would Have Required Labeling of Foods Containing Genetically Modified Ingredients

During last week’s election, voters in California rejected Proposition 37, which would have been the first ballot issue of its kind to require the labeling of all products containing genetically modified ingredients.

As you may recall from a past edition of News & Notes, the Ohio AgriBusiness Association contributed to the “Coalition Against the Costly Food Labeling Proposition” in California to help defeat Proposition 37.

“Defeating Proposition 37 was not only important to agribusinesses in California, but would have had broad ramifications nationally if passed,” said OABA President and CEO Chris Henney. “Directly or indirectly, we all have a stake in defending modern technology against a pejorative, negative attack. If the California proposition had passed, it would have had a negative impact for modern technologies in Ohio and across the country.”
